The Vossische Zeitung reported a planned meeting between Hitler and Strasser. The evening edition ran the headline ‘Strasser’s Demands: Must Hitler Give In?’, and the article argued that ‘If Strasser comes back, it won’t be as a supplicant to the Führer, cowed and remorseful, but as a decisive force.’ Gregor Strasser, they continued, wanted to be Secretary General of the NSDAP, assuming total control. The question was – would Hitler agree? Could their relationship be repaired? And, if not, who stood to lose the most?
