Sheriff Woodard leaned against the hood of Amos’s truck, hand resting on his sidearm, a look of disapproval on his face. Bear ignored the man until he threw his and Mandy’s belongings into the truck. He stopped short of hopping inside and driving away with the guy still leaning against the hood, but only because that would cause more problems than it was worth.

Would’ve been hilarious, though.

“Can I help you, Sheriff?”

Woodard didn’t bother beating around the bush. “Why aren’t you with Amos? You were supposed to stay there.”

“You can’t keep me prisoner, Woodard. Not legally.”

“I could throw you in a jail cell,” Woodard said. There was no passion in his voice. No arrogance. He wasn’t the kind of guy who would do it just to prove he could.

“You could,” Bear agreed. “But you haven’t.” Bear gave the other man a moment to explain, but when the sheriff stayed silent, he continued. “Without charges, there’s not much you can do. Look, I’m not gonna skip town. I’ve given my word to Amos.”

“That don’t mean much to me,” Woodard said.

Bear nodded. He understood. “But you trust Amos.” When Woodard’s face pinched in annoyance, Bear knew he had him right where he wanted him. “And Amos trusts me. I’m helping him on the farm for a few days. My plan was always to hitch a ride to St. Louis by the weekend.”

“Tell that to the officer at Amos’s house.”

Bear scoffed. “If he hadn’t been sleeping on the job, he would’ve seen me leave. Might want to invest in a couple more officers. Or a bigger pot of coffee.”

Woodard was scowling now, and Bear had a feeling that officer would get an earful when he returned to the office.

That wasn’t Bear’s problem. “We good here?”

“No, we’re not good.” But Woodard pushed off the hood, anyway. “I’m choosing to trust Amos. But that doesn’t mean I trust you, Mr. Logan. I’ll be checking in.”

“You do that.” Bear flashed the man a wide smile, then hopped into the truck and backed out into the street. He rolled down the window and gave the other man a salute. “Nice talking to you, Sheriff. Have a good day.”

In his rearview mirror, Bear could see Woodard watching him while he drove down the main street. It was only as Bear turned the corner that the other man made his way over to his cruiser. Bear didn’t think Woodard would follow him, but he made a few random turns and traveled up and down just about every side road in town to make sure no one was tailing him. When he was satisfied, he pulled out the slip of paper Joyce had given him with Garrett’s address on it. Pulling into someone’s driveway first, Bear turned around and headed in the opposite direction, away from town and toward the man’s property.

Bear didn’t know what to expect when he pulled onto the farm, but it didn’t look much different than Amos’. There was a sizeable farmhouse off to the right, set back away from the road, and plenty of fields surrounding the man’s home.
