Chapter Twelve

The next day was my first day in the coliseum, and I felt excitement course through the entirety of my body. I’d itched to go into that building since I’d gotten here, and now I finally had the chance.

I got up and dressed quickly, pulling on a tunic, and making sure no hair had slipped from my braid crown. I hadn’t yet taken it down, the last bit of Siv that connected me to my old life. When everything seemed in place, tail shining, teeth scrubbed, tunic in smoothed, I turned to Hel.

“Wake up! It’s our first day at the coliseum and I want to get there early!” I swam over and poked her in the head. Annoyed, she snapped her jaws at me, nearly taking off my finger. “Come on,” I groaned. “I want you to come.”

She huffed and closed her eyes again.

“I’m sorry. I think being around Manny has made your familiar as lazy as this fat blob of space.” Ava was pulling her hair back and braiding it. She’d already dressed and was looking at Manny with scolding eyes.

I shrugged, though it might have been true. Even the familiars without owners in the Sanctuary were more active than Manny. I’d hardly seen him move since I’d gotten here. He was always just… a blob in the corner. Sometimes he’d unfurl himself to yawn or get comfortable, but that was all he ever did.

“If Hel doesn’t come with me today, then she can go hunt for her own food,” I supplied with a smile. All week I’d hauled bags of crab and fish meat up to her because she’d refused to move.

Her eyes opened at the threat, and she blew out a breath that sounded like exasperation.

“Yeah, you heard me.”

Rolling her eyes, she slowly floated up and came to my side. I gave her a pat on her side in encouragement.

“Threatening Manny doesn’t affect him at all.” Ava shrugged into her jacket and tossed her hair back from the collar. “Anyway, you should get going. Sandy doesn’t like anyone to be late, and if you want to make a good first impression…”

“Of course. Come on, Hel.”

We swam to the coliseum, getting curious looks from other mer. Not at me, but at Hel, who had hardly made an appearance since our first day here. We ignored the stares and swam right up to the coliseum where I stopped at the massive archway of the building. It was domed, the stone cracked, the glittering of diamonds and other jewels gleaming through, giving it an iridescent glow. There were bits of shell and rock eroded into the building as well.

Unable to contain myself any longer, I made my way through the archway and stopped at the entrance to look around.

I’d never seen anything like it.

There were massive shelves, from floor to the domed ceiling, made entirely of coral and seaweed. On them sat piles of stone engravings. Humans filled their libraries with books, I’d seen one or two fray in the frozen water of shipwrecks, and these were similar to those.
