Chapter Twenty-One
The leader of the Bugula tribe stood in the engine room of the decrepit fishing boat. The ship graveyard was in his territory, and therefore it was his property even if it was useless to him. He looked down at the body of his son-in-law, aided by a lantern held by one of his men. The dead man had a pathetic and terrified look on his face, and he lay in a congealed pool of his own blood. The leader thought of the one who had come and told him of the killings at the boats. That man had been in the woods taking a crap while a white man had slaughtered three of his men, including the husband of his beloved sister. That man would be alive long enough to identify that white man and his accomplices, and then he would die as sure as they would.
The leader moved further into the engine room and looked down at the tools the white man had left behind: the acetylene torch, the wrenches, the ply bars. Then he grabbed the lantern from his subordinate and crouched down by the exposed floor plates where the crankshaft had been. The purpose of the white man in his territory and what he wanted with the dead boats became clear, for he was a smart man and a natural leader. They were out there somewhere one the ocean, He would have his revenge.
They left the fishing vessel and went down to the speedboats anchored offshore. Instead of turning them upstream to head back to their village, they turned downstream and out to sea.
The tug was visible on the horizon. Vince had radioed Kruger and asked him to turn on all the lights, including the powerful searchlights high up on the superstructure. Kruger had done it, and Vince could now see the powerful beacons shining from far away. He confirmed and plotted his course, and then told Kruger he could turn them off and resume running with the standard lights so as to not attract unwanted attention. The beacon in the distance disappeared.
He didn’t go into detail with Kruger about what had happened on the fishing boat, other than to say they had got the parts they came for. There would be time later to brief him. Vince was most worried now about retaliation: pirates were not unheard of in these waters. They looked to their brethren on the east side of the continent near Somalia and the successes they were having with raids. Small bands of killers were taking over entire cargo ships filled with millions of dollars of crude oil, or cruise ships with hundreds of passengers to take as hostages. And the companies that owned those ships were paying the ransoms demanded. While the drilling rig would be of little use to pirates, the fishing vessel would be an asset in addition to whatever they could get for the return of living hostages.
Two hours after Vince had spotted the Catherine Anne lit up like a Christmas tree, they sidled up next to her.
