Damned flu. Every joint and organ aches, like being beaten up on the inside. A million needles poke at my skin; my eyes can barely focus. It’s just a fever, like everybody else has. Jennifer has been absent for two days now. Pat and Khalil are failing fast; Layla is just getting over it. I go next door to Layla’s before bedtime and knock.

“Can I still have that flu medicine you were talking about?”

Layla hastily knots the sash of her kimono. She is curiously flat without a bra, and girlish-looking with bare legs and feet — an endearing side to her I’d never noticed before. “Sure. Wait here.”

She shuts the door, leaving me out in the drafty corridor, and I hear voices inside, one low, raspy, and coughing. She returns with a bottle of Nyquil. “Here. Bring back what you don’t need tomorrow, okay? Somebody else still needs it too.”

I shuffle back to bed, miffed at the attempt at secrecy. How clueless — or narrow-minded — does she think I am? And why does she think I’d even care who she had in there?
