José awoke, unsure where he was. Then it hit him that the plane had crashed. He looked to his left and observed Molita slumped in her seat.
“Molita,” he said as he prodded her. “Are you OK? Are you hurt?”
Her head rolled to one side. José unbuckled his belt, and got out of his seat to attend to her.
“Molita?” he said again shaking her.
She stirred and opened her eyes. “José?”
“Yes, it’s José. Are you hurt?”
“I don’t think so. What happened?”
“We crashed in the plane. I am so glad you are OK. Can you stand?”
Molita tried to stand, then clutched at her chest and sat back down again.
“What is it?” José asked. “What’s wrong?”
“Pain in my chest,” she said as she winced. “Get my nitro.”
Molita had suffered a heart attack two years ago and had two stents implanted. Ever since, she always carried her little spray bottle of nitro. José grabbed for her handbag and rummaged through it for the small bottle, then dumped the contents onto the floor. There it was. He picked it up and handed it to Molita, who depressed the cap twice and sprayed the nitro glycerin under her tongue. Within a few seconds, the pain subsided and Molita breathed a little easier.
“Will you be OK for a minute?” José said. “I will check on Pablo. Find out where we are.”
“I’ll be OK,” she said. “But I need a hospital soon.”
“Right,” said José, making his way to the cockpit. Concern overcame him before he entered the cockpit as to what he might find. The nose of the plane had hit a small rock outcropping that propelled it upward, projecting the instrument dashboard toward the back of the cabin. Pablo lay scrunched by the dash and pinned in his seat. Without checking for a pulse, he knew he was dead. He looked for a radio, but didn’t recognize one among the smashed instruments, doubtful that it would be working anyway. Before the crash, he overheard Pablo put out a Mayday signal with location, and the plane had a locater.
With a heavy heart, he returned to the cabin. “Pablo didn’t make it,” he said to Molita.
“Oh no,” she cried, raising her hands to cup her face. “Not Pablo.”
“How are you feeling?” asked José
“I’m OK. The pain has gone … for now.”
He entered the galley and selected a bottle of water from the refrigerator. It was still cool to the touch—even with no power—and he brought it to Molita.
“Can I get you anything else?”
“Not right now. Such a shame about Pablo, but good that we survived.”
José thought, they hadn’t survived yet. Despite the oppressive heat, José thought it best to stay with the plane until rescuers came. There was lots of bottled water stored in cupboards, plus there was enough food to sustain them for several days.
“Pablo gave our location before we crashed,” José said to Molita, who was sweating profusely in the heat. “They should be here soon. The radio is broken, and I have no cell phone reception, so we just have to wait.
