Chapter 24

Hearing about another golden’s existence throughout my entire schooling had not prepared me for actually meeting her. Eszearo exuded strength, Inessa embodied grace, but Aliassa’s gaze seemed to penetrate the depths of my mind. Her bronze eyes, the darkest of the three, carried the weight of wisdom.

I can’t explain it. I never could. If dragons accepted a show of reverence such as bowing or curtseying, I would have done one or the other at that moment.

Instead, my eyes bulged from my face, and Lukas and I scrambled to our feet. Urgently, I signaled Inessa to alert Prince Kyntrion of what was occurring.

“It’s you,” I stammered, my hands trembling as I struggled to contain the emotions warring through me. My heart raced, and an impulse to run forward, lift the Rider, and spin in unbridled joy surged through me.

“Yes,” he said, tilting his head to the side.

His beard wasn’t as thick or curly as most grounders I’d seen, nor was he as short. In fact, where many of the others barely reached my waist, I realized if we stood on even ground, he might be as tall as me. The longer I looked at him, the more I questioned if he was even a grounder.

“We’ve been looking for you,” I said when I realized the silence between us had grown to an uncomfortable length.

“Well, I’ve been avoiding Riders like you,” he declared, his stance defiant.

Lukas made a noise that was somewhere between a snort and a scoff. Both the grounder and his dragon turned to him, their faces expressionless.

“More so like him,” the maybe-grounder corrected. “But I cannot deny Aliassa a chance to see her own kind, not when more will soon be with us.”

Before he continued, a soft breeze picked up from behind and within a moment, Kyntro sped by my side until he was in front of both Lukas and me.

“Greetings, good sir,” Prince Kyntro said, clearly trying—and failing—to hide how happy he was. “It would be the greatest of honors if we would be allowed to dine with you.”

Tell him to shut it, an authoritative, feminine voice said into my head. We won’t stay long.

Before I could relay the new golden's thoughts about our prince to anyone, her Rider spoke up.

“We do not eat where we do not trust,” he said. “And you’ve done nothing to earn our trust. We only came to see Aliassa’s siblings. And congratulate the Golden Son on his newly lain family.”

Ezsearo didn’t wait any longer for me to call him, nor did Inessa for Kyntro. As they rose into the air from behind us, like two blazing comets come too close to the earth, the sun glistened off their scales as if stars were raining from the sky. Somehow, they seemed brighter and more magnificent than I’ve ever seen them before, similar to the way Karliana could shift her coloring to fit in with her surroundings, except the opposite.

They were drawing all eyes to them. No matter how hard I tried—and I assumed others did as well—no one could look away.
