EIGHTEEN

Cullen

The game’s over. I led my team to victory. I played like a champ.

I’m literally on top of the world right now, but honest to God, the only thing I care about as I rush through showering and changing, is that she better be waiting for me in the carpark.

I don’t even know what I’m going to do or say when I get to her, but I know one thing; I can’t go much longer without doing something.

I’ve been fighting every urge day in and day out, but after that game and talking to Pax, I’ve got no fight left in me. I’m ready to give in to whatever this is.

I throw my bag over my shoulder and meet Pax’s eyes as I go to turn.

He grins at me. “Can I come watch?”

I don’t know what I was expecting him to say, but it wasn’t that.

He knows me as well as he knows himself – he knows I’m going to meet up with her. If she’s finally learned how to listen, that is.

“Absolutely fucking not.”

“Oh, c’mon, bro, sharing is caring.” He waggles his brows at me.

“I don’t share.”

“Yeah, I know, learnt that the hard way with toys as a kid.”

I huff out a laugh, and he grins wildly.

“We good?” I ask, more sincere.

He nods. His expression is relaxed, but there’s a hardness in his eyes. “We’re good. Just don’t fuck her around.”

I don’t know what to say to that. I don’t know what to make of any of it, but thirty minutes is up, and I’ve got places to be.

Bryson tosses me his car keys. “Scratch it and you’re dead.”

I look at the keys I’ve just caught, and then to him, in confusion.

“What else are you gonna do? Ride the bus?” he questions me.

It would seem that once again, Bryson is entirely aware of everything that’s going on around him.

“Thanks, B. You’re the man.”

“Does this mean we have to ride the bus? Pax whines at him.

I escape the changing rooms before anything more can be said, last thing I need is the team getting wind of me and the new assistant coach’s daughter. In fact, the last thing I need is anyone getting wind of anything.

I push open the doors and the cool evening air hits me across the face.

There are parents, players, and students loitering around, waiting for everyone to come out of the changing rooms and call it a night.

I scan the car park, the darkness making it hard to see. I don’t see her, but I look again, still hopeful.

I know she can’t stay away either. There’s this energy between us and it has to explode one way or another.

I’m getting more and more irritated with every second that passes where I don’t have eyes on her.

She’s not fucking here.

I step forward, still looking, and still coming up empty.

Fuck.

I hear talking behind me and I already know it’s going to be my boys. And I know that Pax is going to give me so much shit if I’ve been stood up.
