There were thirty stops and sixteen hours between New York City's Penn Station and Union Station in Chicago. The Amtrak train was comfortable, and thanks to booking the private bedroom suite, it was also reasonably private. The room accommodation—complete with sofas and armchairs that converted into beds and excellent Wi-Fi—also included the services of a sleeping car attendant who would turn down their bedding at night and assist with meals. Adrian Knox and Selene Lazaros preferred to hunt their food instead. On this journey, there was a delectable array of blood types on offer.

Adrian selected a twenty-year-old blond college student as his main course. His traveling companion, Selene Lazaros, chose to dine on a more mature vintage—a handsome forty-year-old lawyer with sparkling blue eyes who reminded her of a favored nobleman in the eighteenth century.

It only took a few soft-spoken words paired with their expertise in mind compulsion to induce trance-like states that kept them unaware of their surroundings or what was happening to them. It made them compliant and happy to do whatever Adrian and Selene asked them to do. They were both happy to accept the invitations to dinner.

The vampires chose to savor their meals slowly. There was no need to rush because there were hours to go before they arrived at a station where they could safely dispose of the leftovers. A little more compulsion silenced the more problematic noises their prey might make—screams and moans tended to attract attention. After that, the only sound audible in the passageway from the otherwise silent car was the occasional slurp as they fed.

The town of Maysville, Kentucky was the perfect stop to dispose of the bodies. The train station was on a lonely stretch of Rosemary Clooney Street only feet away from the Ohio River. It was the wee hours of the morning when they stopped there.

Everyone else on the train was asleep or engrossed in their own business, and it was easy for Selene to compel the train conductor to delay leaving the station long enough for Adrian to dump the bodies in the river. Not that he needed much time for the task. Moving faster than the human eye could track was one of the perks of being supernatural.

The train pulled into the station in Chicago around ten o’clock in the morning. They retrieved their bags and disembarked amid the other unsuspecting passengers who didn't know how lucky they were that Adrian and Selene hadn't been in the mood for dessert or midnight snacks.

"Can you feel that? Smell that?" Adrian lifted his chin and sniffed the air. "The energy of this city—the pulsing beat of blood coursing through millions of veins—calling to us." It was a heady feeling, this hunt for their prey.

"We don't have time for this. We have a job to do first.” Selene felt it too but tried to tamp down her excitement. Adrian was right. Something about this city called to them and made them feel alive in an intoxicating way. "We'll have time to play later," she promised.
