Chapter Seven: Your Entrepreneurial Killer Instinct

Congratulations on making it this far. It may seem like you are only beginning but that is because you have not taken the time to look back at how far you have come. You are about to begin an entrepreneurial venture, and everything that is happening now is a result of the culmination of your efforts up to this point.

You may have found the book useful up to this point in achieving a home life, love life, and working environment conducive to success... but this is a whole new game. The life of an entrepreneur is distinct from what you may have encountered in the business world.

You may feel that you are completely on your own, without a mentor or supportive co workers to keep you going. More than at any time in your life you are going to need to rely on your killer instinct to get you through this time. Whether you are trying to woo venture capitalists, promote a new invention, or writing an innovative business book you will find that those who succeed in entrepreneurism are those who can rely on their instincts.

Be a Solution:

The very first step of moving into any entrepreneurial venture is asking yourself this: what problem am I being a solution for? If you cannot answer this question, than it does not bode well for this venture.

I had two friends who I asked this question, one had a coherent answer (he was going to be a trusted third-party between unfamiliar B2B ventures) another had a flippant remark (“I’m going to solve my financial problems”). I am certain that you can guess which one succeeded and which one failed.

By getting in touch with his own instincts my first friend recognized that it is in human nature to distrust new relationships, and a third party acting as an intermediary provides mutual peace of mind to both parties. He was filling a need.

My other friend had a cool-looking product that looked good on a shelf, and that is where is stayed because he could never find a buyer. In seeking a problem that you would be a solution to, your killer instinct can be a very useful guide.

Diligence is Key:

Your vision is not going to take shape overnight. You are going to have to be patient, and what is more you are going to need to be diligent. You may find that you are constantly having to assess and then reassess the situation as you begin a venture.

New business partners that may join along the way need to be thoroughly vetted. Joint ventures need to be closely examined and appraised solely based on their usefulness and effectiveness.

One of my closest friends watched his business collapse right in front of him because he entered into a poorly planned joint venture that was confusing to his customers and costly in terms of revenue. If you intend to expand your venture to beyond a one-person operation you are going to have to accept that partnerships are necessary.
