When Margot left FBI headquarters and headed to her car, she didn’t feel any better about her ongoing case, and felt significantly worse about her recent interactions with Ed and everything she’d learned about him.

They’d solved the murder of a woman who had gone without justice for decades. Tonight, Mei-Ling Fan’s family would finally know what had happened to her. That was the sort of thing that should make Margot feel good about what she was doing here.

She felt nothing.

Yes, she was grateful that her presence in that room had helped solve a murder. But Ed wouldn’t suffer for what he’d done. He wouldn’t even go to trial for it, there would be no point. And Mei-Ling’s family still had no body to bury, and likely never would.

These so-called victories didn’t feel very victorious.

Margot had become a cop because she had believed—perhaps naively—that it was up to her to put some good back into the world. To bring justice to victims like those her father had killed.

Now she was bringing justice to his actual victims, and she didn’t feel anything.

She sat in her car and stared out the window, looking at the bland grayness of the buildings around her. That was how she felt inside.

“Dammit, Margot, get your shit together.” She slammed her palms against her Honda’s steering wheel and accidentally bumped the horn. A group of pigeons flew off, clearly incensed, and two men walking by gave her a stern look.

She didn’t even bother waving to apologize.

Her options for the rest of the day—somehow it was only two in the afternoon—were to go home and feel sorry for herself or go somewhere else and feel sorry for herself. Since Margot didn’t really go places, she was at a loss. Home didn’t feel that comforting at the moment, especially with the task of going through old photos on her to-do list.

She picked up her phone and stared at it, hoping there might be a text or missed call waiting that would give her guidance.

Finally, she called Wes.

He answered after only two rings. “You get precisely two days a week to yourself, and you can’t bear to be without me even that long?”

Margot knew he was teasing, but she didn’t have any other friends. And he was right, in a way.

“Well, damn. I was in the area and thought you might want lunch, but I take back my offer.”

She was not in the area.

“Hey now. I’m a simple man. If this lunch offer involves any kind of deep-fried starch or abundance of meat, you have my attention.”

“Maybe Wise Sons?” she offered. “I could meet you there in twenty in case you have a lingering overnight guest you need to rid yourself of.”

Wes scoffed. “As if they would put up with me all morning. Twenty sounds good though, I’ll meet you there. Or meat you there.” He emphasized his homophonic pun, so she’d know how clever he was.

“Gross.”

She hung up but was smiling by the time she pulled out from the curb. Wise Sons was somewhere they would order from while working, but she’d never eaten there before.
