Present Day…

All Jake could do was hold Sawyer as he sat there in shock. Everyone knew about the Minto Guild. It was hard not to. An entire Guild gone in one night was something that had never happened before. To this day, there had never been confirmation on who had done it, though all signs pointed to Potestas. The tragedy was also one of the main reasons why most races lived so close together now. A “lesson learned” their Kurultai and the other councils of each species had deemed it, but this wasn’t a lesson for his little mate. It was a nightmare come true.

Jake raised his head from where he had buried it in Sawyer’s hair when he heard a soft sob come from his mother. They knew the McLeod family, at least they had. Alice McLeod had been good friends with his mother. Since Brandon McLeod had been their Guild’s Prionsa, they had met often. Jake remembered meeting Brandon and Alice on a few occasions when everyone came together for special events. They were kind, honest people who had even brought their children with them after their births to introduce them to the Jake’s father, and then Jake when he became Kayan. Realisation hit him then.

“We’ve met,” Jake whispered, his head spinning.

“What?” Sawyer stared up at him in puzzlement.

“When you were six months old, your parents brought you to a gathering we had to celebrate my taking over the Clan from my father. It was the first time we had met you. Like your siblings, they only brought you once to introduce you, intending to bring you again when you came of age, but…”

“But they didn’t live that long. We’ve met? You knew them?” Sawyer’s breathing increased, and Jake was worried he was going to hyperventilate as he held his mate tighter trying to comfort him. Jake had no doubt Sawyer felt like his whole world was spinning out of control, because he was right there with him.

“Alice…your mother, was a good friend of mine,” his mother said quietly. “I cared for her very much. We thought there was a good chance you were related, but we had no idea you were their children, granted your eyes should have given it away.” She clutched at his father for support. The memory of losing her friend had always been hard on her. “When the Minto Guild was taken out we had no idea how, and we truly believed the two of you had died that night, too. I swear, we would have looked for you if we had known.”

“I believe you,” Riley whispered, tears streaming down his face. Jake was glad when Dmitri tightened the arm he had draped around the young man.

“So do I.” Sawyer’s watery eyes were pinned on him. “But we don’t remember you. And why didn’t Jake know that I was his mate then?”

“You would have been too young then, angel.” Sliding his hand up to cup his mate’s cheek, Jake applied
