Worldliness is an inner attitude that puts self at the center of life instead of God. Its outlook is limited to the present, and its values come from our pride and selfish desires. Paul rebuked the Christians in Corinth because, although they believed in Christ, they were spiritually immature and still acting like unbelievers: “For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?” (1 Corinthians 3:3).

Temptations from Within

The second way Satan tempts us is from within ourselves—from what the Bible calls “the flesh.” “Flesh” doesn’t refer here just to our physical bodies, but to the desires and appetites that attempt to rule us. “Flesh” means far more than sexual lust (although it includes that). It means a determination to satisfy our own desires and appetites instead of seeking to please God. The Bible says, “Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh” (Romans 8:5 ESV). James wrote, “Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed” (James 1:14).
