For most of January, London was covered in a blanket of snow. One morning, Alice appeared in the kitchen, where me and Raffi were eating our breakfast. She was all smiles and she looked beautiful.
âWhoâs up for sliding down a hill?â she said.
Mrs Berry started laughing. âWell, you can count me out.â
âIâm up for it,â said Raffi.
âAnd Rose?â said Alice. âIs Rose up for it?â
âOf course she is,â said Raffi, before I could answer.
Alice was so excited that you couldnât help but be excited too. She just sort of caught you up in her happiness.
Sometimes when I looked at Alice, I thought she was far too beautiful for this world. Winnie adored her and joined our little circle of protection. âSheâs like an angel, ainât she, Miss Rose? Sheâs like a proper angel, come down to earth, to give us poor buggers somfinâ nice to look at.â
âI think youâre right, Winnie,â I said, thinking back to the first time Iâd seen her.
âOkay,â said Alice, âwarm coats, boots, scarves and gloves and Raffi, the sledges are in the basement.â
David poked his head around the door. âSo, are they up for it, my darling?â he said.
âOf course they are. Itâs a snowy day and snowy days are made for sliding down hills and rainy days are made for books.â
Raffi came upstairs dragging the yellow wooden sledges behind him.
âWhat about Miss Winnie?â he said.
âBut Winnie has to look after Sarah, darling,â said Alice. âThe baby is too young to be going out in this weather.â
âI donât mind staying,â I said, âif Winnie would like to go.â
âNo, Rose,â said Raffi. âYou have to come with us.â
âNot if she doesnât want to,â said Alice, frowning.
âOf course she wants to. Donât you, Rose? You want to come with us?â
When Raffi was anxious, he had a habit of lifting his shoulders so high that they almost reached his ears and thatâs what he was doing now.
âOf course I want to be with you, Raffi, I canât think of anything Iâd rather do.â
âYou can all go,â said Mrs Berry. âIâve made a big pot of soup for lunch, so Iâve nothing else to do. Iâd love to spend some time with that little angel.â
âIâll tell Winnie,â said Raffi.
Winnie was delighted to be joining us and kept thanking Alice. âItâs awful good of ya, Miss Alice, thinking of me like this. Me mum says Iâve proper landed on me feet here and sheâs right, I proper have.â
âWell, weâre proper glad to have you with us, Miss Winnie,â said Alice, smiling.
Winnie laughed out loud. âI still canât get used to you calling me that. Miss Winnie, indeed! Whoever heard the like?â
To everyoneâs surprise, Raffi had really taken to Winnie. When it wasnât too cold, the pair of them would wheel the pram down to the bottom of the garden and sit on the bench, chatting. I had worried that Raffi would be jealous of the new baby but that seemed never to be the case. Sarah was such a happy little girl and I think this was why he could love her.
