Estimated Position (EP)

Strictly speaking, a DR plot is based solely on courses steered and speed through the water over the measured time since your last fix. But if you can estimate how the current is affecting you, you can do better than that. Applying a correction for current elevates your DR position to an estimated position (EP). An estimated position is your best educated guess of where you are, but until you can confirm it with a fix, it’s still only a guess.

You may never have to use a current vector diagram. Even if you find yourself doing DR navigation through current-riven waters in poor visibility without GPS or radar, the chances are good that you can lay short courses between buoys that mark safe water or announce themselves with a gong, bell, or whistle, then simply guesstimate a steering correction that will get you close enough to find your marks. Still, knowing how current diagrams work gives you a way of thinking about currents that will serve you well.
