Chapter 23

Elijah

I finished everything I wanted to just in time to get ready to go on the road trip with the team. The night before leaving, I juggled the final stages of packing with putting finishing touches on preparing my campaign for the week. While most of what I did would happen on the fly in response to how the games went, I liked to be prepared with some social media posts I could put up if there was nothing else to say as well as a list of facts about the players and the team that I could throw into interviews. That always made it easier to handle ambush interviews or the uncomfortable conversations that followed particularly spectacular failures on the field.

Unlike the first long away trap I took with the team, this time we weren’t all piling up into the bus and driving it to our destination. The first stretch of the away stand was several states away, making it impractical to try to drive the entire way. Not that I wouldn’t necessarily put it past other teams. That was another classic element of baseball club owners. Sometimes the bottom line came out on top when comparing the importance of money versus the comfort and well-being of the players. As long as they were able to suck it up, recoup, and hit the field to perform when the time came, cutting corners on transportation was fair game.

Not so much for Robert. He wasn’t running around splashing out money on ridiculous expenses, and he was a shrewd businessman when it came to various elements of the team. But he also valued time and quality of life, and for that, I was grateful. In a purely selfish way, I was aware, but still grateful. The ride to the last stretch of away games was fun, and I enjoyed the time with my sister. That didn’t mean I was all geared up and on board for another, even longer, road trip. It was a much more appealing idea to just get on a plane, sleep for a couple of hours, and arrive still functional and feeling like I could move.

But that also meant a few extra preparations needed to get underway. It wasn’t just about packing my suitcase. I also needed to think about my carry-on bag and making sure everything was compliant with the rules and regulations. I wasn’t one who had a problem with airline security. The TSA wasn’t my sworn enemy as it seemed to have become for many people. I understood what they needed to do and why, but it wasn’t exactly one of my favorite things in the world. There was still that inherent level of stress that came with making sure everything was packed properly and getting to the airport with plenty of time to go through just in case I ended up one of the randomly selected few.

Which seemed to happen with somewhat aggravating frequency. Like it did the morning we left for our first set of away games of the trip.
