IBI Field Office - Chicago - Thirty-Four Years Later
âHowâs your family holding up?â Agent Nina Johnson placed her right palm on a scanner, unlocking the office door. âI wish you could help us in the field, but a good defense attorney would rip us apart if they found out youâre Debraâs brother.â
âI donât want to cause you any problems,â Agent Clint Rossetti said and followed her inside. The buildingâs interior smelled like bread from the sub shop next door, and it was more noticeable after being gone for several months. âDeb seems to be handling it all right, but sheâs worried about Josh. Nick was practically his adopted brother when they were kids.â
âIâm sorry,â Nina replied. âWeâre doing everything we can, but you know what itâs like here. I may be able to pull in help from Indianapolis and Cincinnati, but I canât guarantee for how long.â
Clint nodded and sat down at his old desk. Nina had granted him full access to the case file via her account, and he didnât want to waste her time. He bypassed most of the autopsy photos, but something in one of them caught his attention.
âWhat are these fragments?â he asked. Nina walked behind him and looked over his shoulder. âThey look like shrapnel, but everything I read said it was a single shot.â
âTheyâre medical implants,â she replied. Clintâs eyebrows rose, given the number of them. âI spoke to William Abbot at AMI about them. Nick Mathis was mapping the long-term progression of his disease so the data could be used to help other patients. The coroner found nanotech in his blood and brain tissue, tooâââsame function, according to Abbot.â
âI bet transport security loved him,â Clint replied. âWhereâs all that data being stored now that Nickâs gone?â
âAbbot wouldnât tell me. Unless it was relevant to Mathisâs death, we wouldnât have legal access to it, anyway.â
Clint was about to reply when his phone beeped. He read the message and then stood. âItâs Josh. Sorry, I have to go to Raleigh. Thanks for allowing me to look over the file. If you ever need anything on another case, call me.â
âIs something wrong?â
âI donât know if youâll believe me,â he said. Nina crossed her arms. âAccording to Josh, Nick Mathis cloned himself.â
