Chapter 20

“You’ll never take me alive!”

“Not with that kind of attitude.” Jenn sighed. “Come on, dude, give it a rest. Everyone else is dead, just come out and I’m sure you can work something out with Doc.”

Thwarp’s voice was shrill, “After he slaughtered everyone?”

“Technically I only killed two people – maybe three depending on how you interpret events. Green Phoenix killed the rest,” I said as I walked over to the half-collapsed bunker.

Fernanda landed next to me as she peered into the building. “Want me to burn out the rat?”

“Only as a last resort,” I answered.

The rest of the camp was on fire, a mix of orange and green flames. Bodies lay strewn about, broken and burned, weapons clutched in dead fingers.

It felt good, to see my enemies shattered before me; the Gold Rush Snakes hadn’t done anything to me personally, but that didn’t matter. By allying themselves with Thwarp, they had sealed their doom.

I glanced at Ahri and Jenn, who stood in front of the bunker.

“Sorry, Fredrick,” the goth said. “He was already inside before we could stop him. Ted Lasby is stuck in there with him.”

Based on Cassiopeia’s research, Thwarp enjoyed a mix of several parahuman gifts including enhanced speed, strength, and superhuman reflexes. He specialized in what he called urban parkour, jumping from wall to wall or scaling rooftops to pull off robberies, assaults, and even assassinations with unnatural skill.

Luckily for us, none of those skills helped him in the middle of the fucking woods. I imagined he had run into hiding the second the camp had come under attack.

Jenn peered at the bunker. “What should we do? Should we just go in there and drag him out?”

“You step foot inside, and I’ll kill the hostage!” Thwarp shouted.

I sighed in frustration; I hated dealing with other supervillains, they were the worst. You’d have better luck negotiating with a brick wall than a determined crook who felt like they had nothing to lose.

For a moment, I debated just firing up my emitters and filling the bunker with flame. But then I remembered we needed Lasby alive; I had made many sacrifices to keep my magnum opus safe, I could make a few more.

“What do you want, Thwarp?”

There was silence.

“What?” the supervillain uttered.

“What do you want?” I repeated. “I can’t imagine you have much interest in dying. You came out here to hide, to get away from the fight brewing between the other leaders in the Society of Evil. Lasby was your insurance policy, right?”

The other man piped up. “I’ll tell you anything you want to know if you can –”

“Shut up!” Thwarp snapped.

I could practically hear the gears in Thwarp’s brain spinning. “I want a plane loaded with five million dollars’ worth of gold bullion!”

Slowly, I took a deep breath. “Thwarp, we’re hours away from the nearest airport, and I don’t have any gold on me. What I can do is give you a ride to Fort Simpson and then make sure you can board a flight. From there, you’re on your own.
