My husband’s confession that he believes Angus is Paisley’s killer might only have come about by me threatening to put our relationship on a break, but it does explain a lot of things. It explains why he left this village when he did, it explains why he never wanted to come back here, and it explains why he would rather fight me for control of a steering wheel than willingly arrive here as a passive passenger. He doesn’t want to see Angus again, ever be around a person like him, a person who somehow, despite the initial investigation, has probably got away with murder.

I feel bad now for not only pushing my husband to the point where he panicked and crashed our car, but for dragging him back here in the first place. It’s like me being taken back to somewhere I feel is dangerous, a place where a killer lurks and not only that but it’s a killer who used to be my best friend. But there is a big difference between me and Lachlan.

I wouldn’t have kept such a thing quiet from my partner like he kept it from me.

I also would have gone to the police with what I believed.

It’s nighttime now and me and my family are all safely tucked up in our beds. Bonnie is beside me in the double, William is in the single and Lachlan, as he volunteered to, has made a bed for himself on the floor. I think everyone is asleep as I can’t hear any movement or voices, but I am very much wide awake. I’m still trying to figure out a way I can keep my promise to my husband.

I told him that I would stay out of the business with Angus, and Lachlan’s suspicions of him, and do that by not going to the police and urging them to investigate that man again. Lachlan is probably right in his fear that the police won’t be able to do anything with the news that Angus once pondered taking a life after watching a horror movie, but Angus would know Lachlan had spoken to them and then he could possibly come for him and us. The problem is, it doesn’t feel right, not when there is a young woman who died, and justice is yet to be done for her and her parents.

I think about how fortunate I am to be lying here in bed beside my daughter, knowing she is safe and well. Compare that to Paisley’s mother, who will never have that feeling again, and it doesn’t seem right that Angus can continue to get away with what he did. I believe Lachlan and his feeling that Angus is the killer because he knew him extremely well. They were best friends, and friends, especially at that tender age, tend to tell each other everything and are not anywhere near as adept at hiding their real self as an adult might be.
