I woke up to darkness, but as I blinked my eyes into focus, warm light was peeking in around the edges of the blinds. What the hell time was it? And why did my mouth taste weird?

According to my phone, it was almost 4:00.

As my mind cleared, the taste made sense too—I’d been at the dentist earlier. In my sleepy haze, I wondered if I’d overslept and missed my appointment because I didn’t remember anything, but then I realized my mouth wouldn’t taste like this if I’d missed the appointment. Whatever drugs they’d given me had been some good shit.

Cautiously, I tongued my teeth. My mouth wasn’t numb anymore, and my jaw ached, but nothing really hurt. There were definitely some new fillings and the promised crowns. The filling that had been loose was gone, replaced by something much more solid that didn’t wiggle precariously when I touched it.

I didn’t remember a thing. Well, I vaguely recalled getting to the office with Jesse and settling into the chair, but after that? Nada. I didn’t even remember coming home.

Slowly and carefully, I sat up. My head was a bit light, but I didn’t think I was in any danger of passing out, so I stood. I was still in the sweats and T-shirt I’d worn to the dentist, and now that I’d slept for a few hours, everything was rumpled. Hell, I felt rumpled.

Shower. A shower sounded amazing.

After a shower—and pausing in front of the mirror to inspect the renovation of my mouth—I got dressed again and shuffled out to the kitchen.

Jesse was in the living room, resting his Kindle against his braced arm on top of a pillow, and he looked up when I came in. “Hey. How are you feeling?”

“Not bad. Kind of hungry.” I tongued my teeth again. “Thinking I should stick with something soft for a while.”

He put his Kindle aside and stood. “We still have soup. That sound good?”

“Yeah, it does.” I motioned him back to the couch. “I can make it. Don’t worry.”

“You’re supposed to be resting until the drugs are out of your system. Sit.”

On any other day, I would have argued because I’m stubborn like that, but the truth was, just getting up, taking a shower, and coming out here had left me feeling more tired than I’d expected. So I huffed like a diva and flopped onto the couch. “Fine.”

Jesse chuckled. “That’s what I thought.”

He heated up a couple of bowls of canned minestrone. I pretty much inhaled mine because, oh yeah, I hadn’t eaten anything since before midnight last night. Then I sat back against the couch and sighed happily. “Much better.”

“I figured you’d be getting hungry. You haven’t eaten in about four hours.”

“Dude, I haven’t eaten since last night.”

“No, we stopped at McDonald’s on the way home. You had a cheeseburger.”

I blinked. “I did?”

“Mmhmm.” He ate some more of his soup. “You were starving and said it sounded good. I think you fell asleep as soon as you finished it.”

“Whoa. I don’t remember any of that.
