The creator had lost count of the number of spins of Earth for which his tube had been stuck fast in the Special Hominidâs window, twisting around through the cosmos at the mercy of the planetâs orbit. Nobody had come to open the window, in line with his own, gloomy prediction, and no amount of tugging or coaxing would dislodge the tube itself. In other words, nothing in his predicament had changed. He did, however, have a plan, which was simple to describe, even if it might prove complicated to execute.
He would go to Earth and free his tube himself.
It was dangerous and daunting, but the more the idea grew in his imagination, the more he liked it, and not just because he could not see any other option. Having thought it through very carefully, he was also excited by the prospect.
His recent escapade in the Greater Multiverse had disturbed and frightened him, but it had been a thrill as well. That feeling of urgency and danger, followed by the surge of relief when everything turned out to be all right, was something he never experienced in his normal existence. He would not want it all the time; far from it. But was it so wrong to yearn for a little stimulation every so often? Now that the idea of going down to Earth had presented itself, it seemed the perfect opportunity for another adventure. It would give him a change of scene, a break from his normal routine. Above all, he would get the chance to do something for once, after so many aeons of simply watching.
The logistics needed careful thought. Since he could hardly go as himself, there were three options, as he saw it.
The first involved turning into a non-hominid creature, such as a quadruped or something airborne. It would give him an interesting perspective, and perhaps the odd useful skill that most hominids did not possess. As a way of getting inside a hominid dwelling to free his tube, however, it did not seem particularly suitable.
The second option was to attempt to produce some offspring of his own, which would then appear in hominid form, as his representative. But this was obviously problematic. Aside from being complicated to organise, it would be a lengthy process, involving a wait not just for the creature to hatch, but to grow up enough to be of any use. He could not do without his tube for that long.
No, there was only one serious option, and that was to inhabit an existing adult body.
Whether it was even possible remained to be seen. Nothing in his existence to date suggested he could tele-transport around the universe into different creaturesâ bodies. On the other hand, he had never tried. In the general scheme of things, entering the body of one single creature was a modest project. It was not asking a lot: it was just a temporary shape-shift, a change of perspective, the kind of thing that by rights should come with the creatorial territory, and it was something any deity worth the name ought to be able to do.
