Among his many awards and recognitions were the Lasker Foundation medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction (the highest civilian award a United States citizen can receive) and the Congressional Gold Medal. Houston institutions that bear his name are the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Baylor College of Medicine’s Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center. Dr. Michael DeBakey was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
