Chapter 12

Mia

Ricky has gone to work without locking me in the pantry. I am creeped out by this sudden change of mood. After all the cruelty, his kindness is disconcerting.

Oh, he hasn’t left me to my own devices. I’m not to just chill out and have a nice day. No, before he left for work at 4 a.m., he told me he expected the house to be spotless when he got home, with a meal ready on the table. Apparently, we’re to eat together.

When I open the fridge, I’m stunned to find it full of food, including treats, as if it had never been emptied. There’s a newspaper on the counter and the TV is on. The radio is back in its usual place. Maybe he realises he won’t get away with it, not now Lindy has been here and witnessed the state I’m in. I can’t bring myself to believe he’s had a change of heart, though it’s something to hang on to.

My laptop is back on the kitchen table. I open it and switch it on. It powers up, asking for my password. Ricky told me he’d changed it. I give it a go and I’m in! So he lied about it. Surprised, I sit back in my chair, wondering what is going on. Why would he give me access to the internet and my emails? I look around and sure as dammit, there is my mobile by the landline.

I sit back down with my mobile in my hand and my laptop on. I have all the tools I need to get help, and yet I’m unable to do anything. He said he wanted this evening to be a special one for the two of us. His erratic behaviour is so confusing I’m paralysed, afraid to act.

After Lindy left, he told me my mother wasn’t really coming over, but he’d had to get her out of the house somehow. She was interfering, he said. And challenging, I thought. He doesn’t like that. He sat on the bed and handed me a glass of water, which I refused. He smiled knowingly. ‘You don’t suspect me of foul play, do you, Mia?’ he said, looking hurt. He was so convincing I thought he might actually be sincere. I apologised, which made him smirk. Then I hated myself for being so gullible. He patted my hand. I pulled it away and asked him why he let her back in the house if he despised her so much.

‘She’s the sort that won’t stop badgering.’

Hope washed over me. I truly hoped Lindy wouldn’t stop badgering.

Opening my phone, I find tons of messages from both Beth and Lindy. Why hasn’t Ricky answered them? What if I ring them and tell them what’s been going on? They’ll both be over in a shot. And then what? I’d have to tell Beth about Sally and Martin. I’d have to tell Dad that his brother is a rapist. And after that, I’d have to tell Sally. My beautiful Sally.
