CHAPTER SEVEN

A THUNDERBOLT of silence followed his remark. Finally she could speak. ‘You’re right,’ Saskia said, but all the while her heart was screaming, Liar. ‘Thank God I was spared that.’

The look in his eyes, shuttered and bleak, was satisfaction indeed. He glanced down at his watch.

‘There are speeches coming up. And then we’re leaving,’ he announced.

‘Already? And just when we’re having so much fun.’

Scowling, Alex escorted her down the stairs, Saskia heading for the refuge of the ladies’ lounge while he sought out the event’s organisers.

The lounge was like a sanctuary inside, the velvet wallpaper, luxurious drapes and deep tub chairs making the room feel more like a sitting room than a bathroom.

She stood at the basins, holding a damp cloth to her heated face. What was it about that man? Lulling her into a false sense of security one minute, digging deep under her skin the next?

The door behind her swung open and she caught the flash of silver satin in the mirror. Saskia let her eyes fall shut and suppressed a groan. The last person she really wanted to see right now was Carmen. Her sanctuary had suddenly turned to hell.

‘Things getting a little heated between you two lovers then?’ she enquired.

‘I’ve just got something in my eye,’ Saskia responded, dabbing the cloth under her lowered eyelashes, uncomfortable with the thought that Carmen had been watching them. She pulled the fabric away, glancing down at the cloth. ‘There,’ she said smiling, pretending, before screwing it into a ball and tossing it into the waste. She turned around as if she was about to leave. ‘Are you enjoying the ball? Alex said the speeches are about to begin. I must join him.’

‘You’re not going to win, you know. This job is going to be mine.’ Carmen’s face was set into a mask so tightly bound with loathing that Saskia felt the first stirrings of fear. They’d never been what she’d call friends, but this naked anger was something new. Something frightening.

‘You seem pretty sure of yourself,’ Saskia replied calmly, trying to avoid a slanging match and wishing Carmen would move away from the door so she could escape. ‘Good luck with your profile, in that case.’

‘So how did you do it?’ Carmen asked, not moving an inch.

‘How did I do what, exactly?’

‘Get Alex to agree to marry you. I thought he’d be the last guy you’d want to get hooked up with after the way he wiped your father’s company off the face of the earth.’

Saskia did a double take. ‘You know about that? How the hell—?’

Carmen smiled—if you could call the way her lips thinned and curved nastily a smile. ‘I do thorough research. It’s a particular skill of mine. Or one of them.’ She tilted her head, her eyes glinting dangerously even in the subdued lighting. ‘Did you think I’d leave it to chance who we were assigned to profile? Who do you think suggested the subjects?’

Saskia laughed. ‘You can’t be serious. The board would hardly let you choose them.
