The other serious concern with alcohol is binge consumption. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 grams percent or above. This typically happens when men consume five or more drinks, and when women consume four or more drinks, in about two hours. First comes the buzz, then, if you’re lucky, the vomiting before too much alcohol hits your bloodstream. There is a significant risk of alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal.

According to a Center for Disease Control report from October 2012, approximately 80,000 US deaths are attributed to excessive alcohol consumption each year, making it the third leading “lifestyle related” cause of death in the country. Additionally, under twenty-one drinkers accounted for 4,700 deaths and 189,000 emergency room visits for injuries or conditions directly related to alcohol consumption. These are very sobering statistics (pun intended). Be smart, have a sober friend, take it easy . . . trust me, you will have a lot more fun if you can remember it!
