Bleeding Air from Hot Water Heating Systems

If a hot water heating system is not delivering heat to all rooms evenly or is producing a loud banging noise, air may be trapped within the system. Individual radiators can be bled to remove the air:

[ 1 ] Visually identify the bleed valve on the radiator. The owner’s manual, if available, will indicate its location and offer specific instructions. Some bleed valves require a special tool supplied with the radiator when new.

[ 2 ] Set a bucket under the bleed valve.

[ 3 ] Open the bleed valve with a screwdriver or special tool.

[ 4 ] When water, instead of air, exits the valve, close the valve.
