“Mags?” Patrick sounded worried as he answered my call on the second ring.

“Can you meet me at the burger joint on Washington?”

“Sure. When?”

“Now.”

“Ten minutes,” he promised.

I disconnected the call. Parked in the rear of the lot, I left the animals in the car when I headed inside to order the promised food.

“For some Patrick too get,” DeeDee urged.

“Now I’ve seen everything,” God muttered from the dashboard. “The furries have taken to feeding the humans.”

“It’s sweet of her to be so thoughtful,” Piss told him.

I closed the door and walked away, not wanting to listen to the rest of their argument. I stood on the line, placed my order, and then dashed into the restroom while the food was prepared.

By the time I emerged with a bag of sandwiches and a tray with two coffees, Patrick was pacing beside my car, staring down at his phone. Frown lines creased his forehead and every muscle in his body was rigid with tension.

“Are you okay?” he asked, rushing toward me.

I nodded.

“I can’t stay. There’s been a kidnapping. A twelve-year-old girl. I just got the alert.”

Sucking in a shocked breath, I stumbled slightly.

“I’ve got to go,” Patrick said. “Go home.”

“Wait,” I told him. “You have to see what I’ve got.” I thrust the food and drink into his arms, unlocked the car, and pulled the photographs from the dashboard. “Is it one of these girls?”

I held the pictures up for him to see.

Putting the food on the hood of the car, he squinted at the pictures. “This one.” He tapped a page with a finger. “Where’d you get these?”

“The carnival.”

He gave me a questioning look.

“They were under a dumpster.” It wasn’t a lie.

“Her name is Megan Sussman.” He put the pictures on the hood, quickly photographing each with his phone. “There’s nothing for you to do now, Mags. The cops are going to be all over this. Don’t attract attention. Go home. Stay safe.”

I nodded.

“I don’t believe you,” he muttered.

“I got you a coffee and a sandwich,” I replied.

He flashed a grudging grin. “You’re impossible. You do know that, don’t you?” He grabbed a coffee and sandwich. “Thanks for this. Don’t know the next chance I’ll get to eat. Call if you need me and please, I’m begging you, at least try to keep a low profile.”

“That I can do,” I told him.

I gathered up the pictures, folding them and sticking them in my back pocket as he sped off. Climbing back into the car, I fought the urge to pound on the steering wheel, knowing it would startle the animals. Instead, I distributed the food to the hungry horde.

“Failed,” DeeDee whined, miserably, ignoring the food. “Save didn’t her we.”

“It doesn’t make sense,” God argued. “Nat heard Dapper say they were taking her tonight. Why would they have done it early?”

“Because we trashed his trailer,” Piss guessed guiltily.

“You don’t know that,” I told her. “We don’t know anything. We have to calm down. Think this thing through. Figure out exactly what’s going on and save the girl.
