Even after all the nightâs revelations, I still couldnât bring myself to believe that my parents were standing here in front of me. âYouâre not my mom and dad.â
âWe are,â insisted the male acolyte.
âProve it,â I said. âTell us something only we would know.â
It was the female acolyte that spoke next. "When I first took you and Damian to that burger bar, you had lettuce and tomato on your burger. You asked me to pick out all of the vegetables for you even though I told you several times-"
"-it would be good for me in the long run," I finished disbelievingly.
We couldn't believe it. Our parents, through some bizarre twist of fate, had been returned to us, albeit in the form of Deacon's acolytes.
Damian and I fell to the ground simultaneously, and suddenly, we weren't grown men fleeing through the woods from psychotic worshippers. Instead, we were two kids stranded at a campsite, wondering why mommy and daddy had left us.
Mom and Dad moved forwards, hugging us close to their robed chests. âIâm so sorry we left you,â said Dad. âThere are so many things I want to tell you.â
Drying his eyes, Damian said, âWell, best start, then.â
âYou really want to do this now?â asked Mom.
âWe can walk and talk,â insisted Damian. âWeâve spent too many years not knowing the truth to just walk away.â
"All right," said Dad. "But we need to get going. They will be on the move."
As we walked through the woods, the most bizarre family outing anyone could have possibly imagined, Dad spoke. "I suppose I'll start at the beginning."
"I used to be a bit of a drifter. I left my hometown with very few qualifications, and I spent my time moving from place to place, trying to find anywhere that would take me on for work. Your mother was working as a waitress in one of the towns I stopped in."
âWe started chatting,â interjected Mom. âAnd it was very much love at first sight.â
"One night, she was leaving the diner after a late shift. It was very dark and not the kind of neighborhood where a young woman should walk home alone," said Dad, and I remembered the dating tips he had given me as a kid. 'Always make your partner feel safe with you.' I could see now where that mindset had come from.
âAnyway, we were walking home when we saw a homeless man that Nancy usually passed on her route to and from her shift. Nancy had always taken the time to make sure that he had a bit of loose change, often bringing him leftovers from the diner. She was worried about him, wanted to make sure he was all right. I would have just gladly walked on and left him, but your mother was a far more empathic person than me." He paused, and cleared his throat. "That night, Nancy approached him and started to speak, at which point, he started convulsing."
Mom spoke up. âAnd then there was this blue mist coming out of him.
