“Tear Down This Wall!”

There is some disagreement among former Reagan staffers about how the most famous line from his second trip to West Berlin came into being. But two facts are not in dispute: First, several top Reagan advisers wanted that line cut—they did not want the president to call on the Soviets to tear down the Berlin Wall in his June 12, 1987, speech at the Brandenburg Gate. And second, Reagan himself wanted the line kept in. Biographer Steven F. Hayward notes that Reagan would go on to repeat the call to tear down the wall fourteen times during the remaining year and a half of his presidency. In 1989, less than a year after Reagan left office, the wall fell. And in 1990, as the formal reunion of West and East Germany was being finalized, Reagan returned to Berlin as a private citizen and himself took a hammer and chisel to one of the wall’s remaining fragments.
