Chapter Eight

"We're here, sir."

Dick glanced up to see where they were. There really wasn't much to see besides trees, and it was dark enough outside that all he could see was the shadows in those trees. "You don't think it's going to be weird for us to be visiting so late at night?"

"We are here under the authority of the time keeper," Mannford said. "They wouldn't dare refuse us entry. We have King Arthur's guards to back up our story."

Dick turned to look at Mannford. "What story?"

"The time keeper has called for the Council of Lords. We have been unable to locate Lord Hawke. As senior elder for the hawk casts, Elder Saul might know where he is."

"Okay, that works." Maybe.

"Sir." Mannford's hand landed on Dick's arm. "You must believe it. Shifters can smell a lie."

"Okay, maybe that won't work." Dick wasn't good at lying, but he'd try anything to locate Hawke. "Maybe you should do the talking. I'll just pretend to be along for the ride as one of Lord Harrington's advisors."

Mannford frowned. "I'm not sure that will work, sir. Elder Saul may not speak to me. I am merely the Harrington steward. I doubt he will lower himself to speak to me unless it's to give me an order."

Dick's eyes widened when he growled. That wasn't a sound he never expected to hear come out of his mouth. "I don't know why I did that."

The corner of Mannford's mouth curved up, something else Dick never expected. "You and your friends are very unusual people, Master Dick, and it has always been my pleasure to know you, now even more."

Did that mean they weren't going to talk about that weird sound?

When the SUV slowed then came to a stop in front of a large mansion, Dick climbed out and walked around to the other side of the vehicle. When he got to the other side, he stopped and stared up at the mansion.

It looked nothing like Harrington Hall. The Harrington estate had been around for centuries and had an old stately feel to it. This place felt old, but there were cracks in the facade that made Dick think it wasn't very well maintained. Chips in the stone steps, a cracked window on the second floor, fading paint. It really was a disaster.

He leaned toward Mannford, whispering out of the side of his mouth, "You would never let Harrington Hall fall into such disrepair."

"Bloody right I wouldn't."

"Maybe Elder Saul should have spent just a little bit more money on making sure his house wasn't falling down around his ears than spending it frivolously."

It was a thought.

"You are assuming he intends to stay here," Mannford pointed out. "Lord Hawke's estate is much bigger than this. Maybe he had hopes of taking up residence there, so keeping up his current residence was not important."

"Yeah, that isn't going to happen." Not as long as he was breathing.

Dick started up the stone steps, very aware of the fact that Mannford had fallen a step behind him and three guards walked after him.
