Be Pure in Heart!

Blessed are the pure in heart,

for they will see God.

PURE NONSENSE?

I suspect readers of this chapter fall into various categories. Some won’t have the slightest idea what I’m about to talk about. Others will probably assume I’m going to spend the entire chapter talking about that supposed preoccupation of religious people: sex. I imagine I’m going to teach the first group and surprise the second. Sex will make an appearance, but only briefly.

This particular beatitude doesn’t initially seem to have anything to do with happiness. The word ‘pure’ has a rather limited usage today. We use it with reference to bottled water and to air, as well as in sentences such as, ‘It was just pure stupidity!’ So is this chapter just going to be filled with nonsense – pure or otherwise? Or is it, like the other beatitudes, going to give us a clue about the path to true happiness?
