Q&A III
Male Student: Professor, I felt that one of the more powerful exercises yesterday, was the alternate reality. And in discussing it with my wife last night, we sort of struggled to come up with alternative realities that were credible and that were acceptable to us in certain situations of concerns that we had. Do you have any additional tips or pointers that could help us do this more appropriately?
Professor Rao: Sure. First of all, the very notion of an alternate reality goes against the grain. In other words, most of your life, you've been thinking, "This is the reality." So, the idea that this is not the reality, but a reality requires some time to get your arms around. So, bear that in mind.
Second, every time you articulate your reality, if you look at each of the elements that you put in there, you will notice that there are assumptions which are embedded in it. For example, supposing you say, "I have a toxic boss," and part of the evidence that you have a toxic boss is that he ignores your greetings, that he does not return you phone calls, that he does not reply to your email messages. Look at each of these assumptions, and ask yourself, "Is it possible that it isn't this way, but some other way?" So, as you start playing around with it, the alternate reality will come out by itself. It's a big help if you can do it in a small group, because other people can frequently see things that you're too close to, and you simply can't see. So, it might take you two or three iterations before you come across something, which you think, "Yeah, this is possible. I can believe in it." And then it takes some time to work yourself up. So, don't beat yourself up if you don’t succeed the first one or two times. Keep doing it, and eventually it will work. When it works, you'll find the change it makes in your life is so dramatic, that you'll never want to give it up. You'll just keep applying it to different situations. That's exactly as it should be.
Male Student: For the past few days, I had wanted a convertible, so every single day that I called in they were all sold out. So, this morning, I set the intention after work, and just wrote down and said, "Well, it would be a miracle if…..” and they actually did have one, I'd figure that was a miracle.
Professor Rao: Yes! Have the clear understanding that you did create a miracle. Don't classify it as, you know, this was lucky, or this was a coincidence, and celebrate it. As you get used to the feeling, that yes, something happened in your life that you would classify as a miracle, you'll find you observe many more such events in your life. And the whole idea is as you get to the point where you know that there is going to be a steady stream of such occurrences in your life.
