DESMOND EXAMINED THE bedroom carefully, hand resting on his chin. The décor surrounding him was decidedly feminine, but it was perfect for Ana. The oak paneled walls matched the massive bed, armoire, escritoire, and vanity. The sunny yellow curtains and duvet were heavy damask embroidered in a white, floral pattern and edged in gold. The windows were large, letting in plenty of light.
âObserve the separate washroom, my lord,â said the propertyâs caretaker. The owner was looking to rent it to someone and Desmond ⦠Desmond had no idea what he was doing. Still, he stepped through the open door and into the washroom where a large tub rested in the center. A mirror hung on the wall over a washstand and an armoire could hold towels, linens, a dressing gown, soaps, and oils. A water closet had been installed as well, the latest invention rapidly replacing chamber pots in the homes of the wealthy throughout the realm. The tiles were hand-painted, each one boasting a depiction of colorful flowers. Blue, yellow, pink ⦠it was bright and airy, the whole townhouse was. It was perfect for her.
âIâll take it,â Desmond said, before he could talk himself out of it.
The caretaker nodded, a wide smile spreading over his slender face. âExcellent, my lord. If youâll follow me to the library, we can see to the business of signing the rental agreement.â
Desmond followed silently. Outwardly, he was the picture of dignified calm. Inwardly, he was a tumult of swirling emotions, each one stronger and more turbulent than the last. After leaving Ana on the front steps of The Red Rose, heâd come immediately to this fashionable area of town, where row after row of opulent townhouses lined cobblestone streets. Gas lamps lit every corner and the mews behind the houses held beautiful animals of prestigious bloodlines. A few streets over was the townhouse Desmond had allowed Abigail to keep after their divorce. He cringed to think of Ana within ten miles of Abigail, but it couldnât be helped. This was where lords of the realm stashed their mistresses.
Desmond read over the rental agreement without comprehending a word of it, and signed his name. The keys to the house were deposited into his hand and the caretaker vanished, promising that he would have the butler gather the house staff to greet their new lord. The rented property had a small staff that consisted of a butler, cook, housekeeper, two chambermaids, four footmen, and a gardener. Desmond made a mental to note to hire a ladyâs maid as well. Oh, and clothing, his mistress would need clothing.
His head spun as he sank down into the chair behind the desk in the library. A fire crackled in the hearth behind him and he turned toward the flames, staring into them as they danced and leapt. The scent of Ana clung to his clothing, and her kiss still lingered on his lips. Just thinking of her caused his body to respond until his blood was roaring
