As the war progressed and all units gained experience in treating the thousands of injuries generated by the bombing campaign, surgeons and doctors trained at East Grinstead spread skills and expertise across the whole organisation. Denis Bodenham, for instance, the RAFMS surgeon trained by McIndoe to head up the Rauceby burns unit, became an accepted authority on the treatment of the burned hand. Patients could therefore move between East Grinstead for their facial reconstructions, and Rauceby for attention to their hands, lightening the load on both. Archibald McIndoe’s daughter, Vanora Marland, remembered that this was a distinguishing feature of her father’s professional style. He moved rapidly around East Grinstead, always trailed by a group of trainee surgeons (he told her, ‘I like the hounds at my heels’) and was delighted when he could send patients to a former trainee whose expertise now matched or even exceeded his own. But always it was East Grinstead, and McIndoe, at the heart of the care given to burned aircrew, and there were two sites in particular – one very close to Ward III, and one rather further away in every sense – that demonstrated the very real practical and psychological importance of one surgeon to this extraordinary group of warrior-casualties.
