Chapter Twenty-Two: Cole

“This has to be an accident.” My mind spins as I think about how I’m going to break this to Lyra’s father. Two missing people in two days — nothing about this is good. I’m worried for both of them, but in truth, I’m worried for me just as much. We’ve spent the last few hours hunting all over this island for any sign of Kerrigan but she seems to have vanished into thin air. Somehow, I keep falling into the worst kind of trouble without even meaning to. If the police catch wind of a second missing person on the island, there’s only one person they’re going to suspect. Me.

Lyra’s father will get rid of me without a second thought, because another missing person is just more bad press for Stonecliffe. It’s hard to turn a profit with the tourists when their wives keep disappearing. No one wants to stay at a resort where the guests die.

Whatever happened this week will be the end of all of us if we can’t get to the bottom of things soon.

I still wonder about Lyra, though. I sent her text messages yesterday to tell her about Mika, but none of them were delivered. I’ve been trying to call her on the satellite phone all morning but the call isn’t connecting. The service here is so spotty, I can’t depend on any of the normal methods of communication. I just wish there were a way I could confirm that Lyra actually got off the island. It’s probably foolish of me to worry about her. She’s always been independent to a fault, but with the way the last twenty-four hours have unraveled, I can’t not think the worst. My mind is running wild with every possibility, and the one person I want to talk to — Kerrigan — has vanished on me.

Is there a chance she left on purpose? Maybe she couldn’t handle the fighting with her husband so she left without telling any of us. Short of rowing herself to the mainland, I don’t know how else she could escape, though. And even then, she would have at least told me, right? And then I think of how private Kerrigan has been over the years, only revealing things when it best suited her. No, I realize, she wouldn’t tell me anything she didn’t have to; she and I go way back, but that means little in the world she lives in.

“I know what you did.” Kip’s angry voice is suddenly at my side. “We all know.”

“Know what?” I growl, thinking how much easier things would be if this tool would have been the one to disappear.

“Mika found out about the missing girl last summer. It’s all over the internet.” Kip’s eyes are locked onto mine. “Just like the other tourist who had the ‘unfortunate accident’. I know you were the main suspect, accused of negligence after all the alcohol and drugs you provided. Why haven’t you put up a fence or
