Chapter 4

NELLA

Fucking frog. This wasn’t the first time Gerald gave me a poisonous ass. Most had heard of a fiery one, but this was like purging everything within to utterly destroy me by forcing it out in waves of despair. My arms took hold of my gut to metaphorically anchor everything above my pelvis. Trudging my way through the few people on the dance floor, I bumped into someone I never wanted to see again.

My shoulder slammed into hers when trying to direct my path. Stopping to apologize, I was banished not uncivilized. When I went to open my mouth, the words got stuck. She was wearing a golden dress that made her tan skin glow even brighter. Her hair fell in the spiral curls she got from her father. Even for her age, time had been kind now that she was over forty. When her blue eyes found my green ones, she was just as unnerved as I was.

“Wendy,” I breathed out her name.

“Nella.” Her hand immediately flew back to grab the wrist of the man she was dancing with. His back was to us because they were being silly together, but that stopped when she signaled her distress. Distress. Ha, I never did a single thing to any of them.

“Nella,” he wheezed, hurting my heart all over again by hearing how it rolled so easily from his lips. Just like Wendy, Tobias aged gracefully, no, perfectly. His dark hair still didn’t have the salty lines of those who were our age. His body still looked like the one that used to hold me tight while everything fell apart in my home life, and Wendy had been the best friend I cried to about it when I wasn’t with him.

“What are you two doing here? This isn’t a coven sanctioned bar.” My response was probably rude, but we all followed rules for this sort of thing to not happen. I was in the spot allotted to me when I was stripped of my access to my former home.

“Calvin got remarried, so we’re all here for him. He isn’t part of the coven, so we came to where he could go.” Wendy looked anywhere but me.

All thoughts of my exploding bowels took the backseat in my brain. I could shit myself right now, and it wouldn’t bother me because of all the suffering I had already endured by them.

“Re-married.” Part of me wanted to scoff. I hadn’t been married once, and that dream went out the window with what I had to do that made me eternal.

“You should leave, Nella. More of our coven are here, and they won’t take kind to seeing you the way we have.” Wendy’s eyes kept surfacing the crowd to make sure she wasn’t caught talking to me.

“Right. Let me just leave the one place I can go for you to feel less awkward even though you can barhop to the next one with ease because you’re not banned from them.” Rolling my eyes, Wendy was just a wolf hidden among the sheep, but I learned that a little too late in my early life.
