Gray and Tamura were taken to a room and told to remain there until a decision was made. The windowless room had a low-level table, chairs, and nothing more. On the table were a teakettle, cups, and bottled water. A few minutes later, two women entered the room, placed two bamboo bento boxes on the table, and left.

“They’re feeding us. So it can’t be all that bad,” Tamura said as she lifted the cover off one. “Come and eat. It’s disrespectful to refuse food.”

“I still can’t believe I lost my temper back there,” Gray said as he ate. “It’s unlike me. I don’t know what happened.”

“You’re frustrated. I’m frustrated. We know what we need to do, but we, unfortunately, need to involve others. And they don’t see things as clearly as we do.”

“I don’t know how you manage to deal with this every day with your bosses.”

“It’s not easy. I’ve often thought of leaving the force, but I get a win every so often, and I decide to stay.” Tamura leaned across the table. “Also, be careful of what you say. The room is most likely listening.”

“What do you think? It was difficult to read their faces back there.”

“I think we have a fifty-fifty chance. And that’s good. That means they’re actually having a conversation and debating our proposal. The worst would have been us being escorted back to the car.”

“When you put it that way, I can see we’re in the best position possible.”

After eating, Gray and Tamura sat quietly, lost in their thoughts for the next hour. Suddenly the door opened, and in walked Tanaka, breathing slightly hard. The look on Tanaka’s face told Gray he was still heated from their earlier exchange.

Tanaka’s gaze settled on Gray. “Special Agent Gray, do you think Inspector Tamura can protect you? Do you think the TMPD can protect you? Is that why you disrespected me in front of my brothers?”

Gray sat up straight. “I apologize, Tanaka-san. I should have kept control of my emotions. I meant no disrespect.”

“I have contacts at Interpol. They know nothing of you coming down here. That tells me you two are not here on official business.”

“Interpol doesn’t know everything,” Tamura said. “I can assure you Special Agent Gray is very much a part of this investigation, which is very official.”

“Silence!” Tanaka shot Tamura a nasty look.

“Does anyone know you are here in Kobe, locked away in the room, in a home high up in the mountains? You know how easy it would be for you to disappear?” Tanaka looked at Tamura. “That question applies to both of you.”

Gray cleared his throat. “With all due respect. I am very much aware of the dangers of coming here. It didn’t stop me. I’m an FBI agent. Situations like this are not uncommon in my line of work. With that said, I am not in favor of losing my life. I’m here because I believe with the Yamaguchi’s help, we can catch the trafficker. It’s a win-win situation. That is my goal.
