Help with housing costs

If your income and savings are low, you may be entitled to state help with your mortgage or rent. The rules are often complex and you can find more information at GOV.UK. In some cases, you claim different benefits depending on whether you are under or over State Pension age, but note that there was an important change to the rules on 15 May 2019. Before that date, only one member of a couple had to be over State Pension age for the household to be eligible for pension-age benefits. For new claims from that date onwards, both members of the couple have to be over State Pension age. This means, for example, that if one of you is aged, say, 68 and the other 65, you would have to claim Universal Credit rather than Pension Credit until the younger person also reached State Pension age. Since Universal Credit is typically a less generous benefit, this can have a serious impact on your income – though help with housing costs is broadly the same.
