Summary
Revelation shows the members of the church in all ages that their struggle against the world, the flesh and the devil, is not a trivial nor a private thing. The theme of conflict, which John weaves throughout, draws all the saints into the arena in which the victory of Christ is achieved. As the gospel has structured the theme of the day of the Lord, so it shows that there is but one conflict in which we are all caught up. Initially the conflict was completely worked out in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Satan was decisively defeated at the cross. Christâs victory was for us, so that all believers are accounted victorious in him. Then the same conflict is manifested in the life of the church as Christ, through his gospel applied by the Spirit, works to conform the members of his body to his likeness. Finally the conflict is resolved in the consummation. The millennium, as an expression of the victory of Christ, cannot be confined to the consummation or to a period just prior to it.
Thesis
The conflict of the day of the Lord is structured by the gospel so that it characterizes the three dimensions of salvation â justification, sanctification and glorification. All of the conflict relates to all three dimensions.
