The next morning, Sam got up bright and early. This was surprisingly easier than she normally would have expected, simply because she’d managed to get into bed at a decent hour the night before.

She supposed she had the Redwood Rings’ plumbing issues and last-minute closure to thank for that.

After showering in the park’s communal facilities and eating a quick breakfast, she was out the door and headed to her Jeep, stopping to give Dog a quick scratch behind the ears on her way.

Syc was already outside in his usual seat by the fire, his daily wake-and-bake joint already lit in his hand as he called after her, “Got everything you need?”

“Pretty sure, yeah. Why? You gonna worry about me while I’m gone?”

“Didn’t say that. This is about me trying to avoid as much trouble as possible. Normally, that wouldn’t include me making this kind of offer, but if it keeps you and your friend from getting into even more trouble on your own… Want me to come along with?”

“You don’t think we can handle it on our own, huh?” Sam chuckled. “If I didn’t know better, Syc, I’d say you actually care what happens to us out there.”

“Yeah, but you know better.” He puffed on his joint. “Still, the offer stands.”

“Nah, we’re good. Rip’s gonna meet us up there right off the highway. I’m pretty sure that’s where one of the trailheads starts, and then he’s coming with us as a sort of guide, I guess. But thanks.”

“Huh.” When he spoke again through an exhale, his voice came out thickly muffled by all the smoke. “Well, if anyone knows the area well enough, it’d be him.”

“That’s what we’re thinking too. Pretty much in his backyard, so it looks like we’ve got it covered.”

Syc waved a hand in farewell without looking at her, choosing instead to stare into the smoldering embers of the firepit like he usually did. “Just don’t expect me to wait up for you.”

Sam laughed again as she made it to her Jeep. “Of course not. That’s what Dog’s here for.”
