Cemeteries and Graveyards

Cemeteries and hauntings would seem to go hand in hand, but in actuality, reports of haunted cemeteries are far less common than those of specter-plagued houses. However, Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in Chicago has been dubbed the most haunted cemetery in America by the GRS. The Grove earned a frightening reputation with reports of a mysterious lady in white, flying light orbs, and even vanishing automobiles.

Located on the edge of the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve in the suburb of Midlothian, Illinois, this 200-year-old burial ground has been largely forgotten. But almost all Midwestern ghost hunters place the Grove high on their haunted list.

Although the last actual burial in the Grove took place in 1989, the place had been virtually abandoned and forgotten by the mid-nineteenth century. Since that time, many apparitions have been captured on film, the most famous being the image of a woman seated on a tombstone that was taken with infrared film. This spirit is known as “the White Lady” or “the Madonna of Bachelor’s Grove.” She is rumored to be the ghost of a woman buried in the cemetery next to her infant son. She has been seen on nights of the full moon, wandering about the ceme-tery with a baby in her arms.
