No-art (rectangles) gameplay proof-of-concept

Experienced game developers will often tell you that they first make the entire game with placeholder art. Instead of getting caught up in creating beautiful artwork that is polished and time consuming, program your entire game using simple geometric shapes. If your gameplay "feels right" and is fun when there is nothing more than colored rectangles or circles on screen, you have a winner.

This technique is also the key to finishing before the deadline. If you focus solely upon the art at the onset, you will likely find yourself with a good looking but broken game when the time is up. It is better to have good gameplay—make everything work first, and then make it pretty.

Once your game is fun to play, any time that remains can be confidently spent on making the art as great as the game mechanics themselves. No matter what you do, if your game works before the deadline and pressure is off—you can craft fantastic art with the confidence that your game is functional and you'll finish in time.
