Joshua sneaked a glance over Johnny’s shoulder out

the parlor window into the back garden where icicles dripped

off the naked tree branches. Will sat beside Johnny on the

settee with Hannah in his lap. She slept, mouth open and

sprawled backward on his chest. Bits of milk stained her

dress, one of Asher’s from his infancy. Joshua and Will had

gone through more boxes in the morning and found a stash.

It was a little big, but Laura was pleased to see they’d found

it and had helped them find another box, as well as taken

Joshua’s coat for alterations.

Johnny had turned up seconds after she left. Joshua

wasn’t sure how it happened that he and Will ended up with

Johnny in the parlor talking about his ex-lover and beloved

aunt, but he was damn grateful that the house was

otherwise empty, because Johnny sported a costume

inspired by Edwardian England, although with more pink.

He’d brushed into the house as soon as Elizabet opened the

door, announcing himself as Jonathan von Cartier, which
