Abigail ran through the trees as fast as she could.
Back inside the mansion, much yelling was taking place. The servants and Marie-Marie had retreated out of sight. Julien, her mother and her father had so far been unable to calm down. Her mother was crying inconsolably. Julien had knocked the contents on top of a table to the floor. Her father had ordered Julien to leave the room and had told him if he couldnât contain himself then he was to leave the plantation and not come back for a while. Her father then told her mother that she needed to leave, too. He told her how evil she was, and pleaded with her to tell him why she had said what she had. Her mother had not responded as Abigail thought she would. Seeing her mother throw her arms around her father and stare up at him with sad eyes and ask, âYou love her and not me?â had broken what was left of her heart into tiny little pieces.
Abigail didnât wait to hear her papaâs answer. Chadwick Spencer Speck! Chadwick Spencer Speck! The name kept repeating in her mind. Tears burned her eyes and blurred her vision. Nearly stumbling over a piece of kindling, she righted herself and kept running until she reached Désireéâs cottage. Pushing through the front door, it banged hard against the wall. A hanging picture threatened to fall.
Désireé and Cyril heard the clamor and came running out of the salle, then stopped when they saw her.
âDid you know?â Abigail whimpered.
Désireé had never saw as much mental and emotional anguish in someoneâs face as she saw at that moment. Attempting to hurry to her, she stopped and held her hands in front of her when Abigailâs fists lifted in the air.
âDid you know!â Abigail screamed.
Tears fell from Désireéâs eyes. âWhat difference does it matter, Abby? Weâre family are we not?â
Abigail choked as a new bout of tears threatened to spill out of her.
âYou knew,â she accused. âAll these years,â she continued, trying her best to hold back her tears. âThatâs why he loved you and Gorée more. You never loved me. All you did is pity me, and nothing more.â
âThatâs not true,â Désireé pleaded, stepping forward in a rush when Abigail looked as if she would flee out of the house. âI didnât even know, Abby! I swear I didnât. Surely you canât believe that. I only learned the truth a few years ago. Surely you can remember the times when Cook snuck us into the kitchen to play together.â
âYeah, I remember that,â Abigail said, facing forward again. âI remember how your father didnât want you near me, so one of the servants had to sneak us around.â
âNo!â Désireé urged. âPapa didnât care! As long as we were outside of the mansion, he never cared. He was trying to keep me from your mother. He didnât trust her. I swear what Iâm telling you is true.â
âWhy didnât he trust her? Had she ever done anything to you?â
Désireé shook her head.
