The Trunk of Dead Secrets

The thought of going to school today sounded like torture.

Layla lay in bed, her eyes wide from the lack of sleep the night before. She just wasn’t feeling it today. Last night, a student died. Murdered, actually, and she was supposed to pretend all was well today? It seemed ridiculous.

Grabbing her phone from the nightstand, she saw a few texts from Ricky.

OMG, Evan said that Morgan got killed last night by a clown. Is tht true? - Ricky

Sighing, she set her phone down.

Waking up in the morning was supposed to be refreshing, but she felt the opposite. She sluggishly stood up and picked out a pair of leggings and a hoodie to wear today. Deciding to ditch school today, she threw on the clothes and went to the bathroom.

After getting washed up, Layla walked downstairs to see Mimi eating cereal and watching cartoons on TV. Normally Mimi left for school after Layla since she started at nine. Grandma was still sleeping upstairs, and Mom was at work.

“How come you’re still here?” Mimi asked, without a hi or good morning.

“I’m not going to school,” said Layla, walking to the kitchen and looking inside the fridge. There was a bag of cold injera in the refrigerator and other random leftovers. She pulled the orange juice out.

“Aww, not fair,” said Mimi, kicking her feet. “I’m not going too.”

“You have to,” said Layla. “I’m not feeling good. I’m sick.”

“Good morning, kiddos,” said Alan, walking down the stairs in his blue plaid pajamas and blue shirt. He yawned and stretched. Layla’s hand stiffened around the orange juice as she poured it into a cup. She watched him from the top of the cup as she sipped the orange juice. He was home a lot and rarely made an effort to find a job, although he claimed otherwise.

Wary of him, she walked to stand next to Mimi, still trying to act casual while she freaked out inside.

“Morning Dad,” Layla replied. He then flipped the channel on the TV to the sports channel.

“Don’t you have school today Layla?” asked Dad, his eyes glued to the screen.

“I’m not feeling well today.”

“I think you should go.”

“But I’m not feeling well. Why are you so concerned?”

“I’m your father, right? Of course, I’m concerned,” he said.

“Normally, you wouldn’t care if I skipped school. You would ask me why I was sick and be super concerned for my health,” said Layla, testing him. This wasn’t him. In the past, when she complained of feeling sick, he would worry right away.

Then he stood up and stared at Layla with what seemed like soulless eyes now. “You’re going to school. Whether you like it or not.”

Wow, Layla remembered Mimi was there and didn’t want to start a scene. It took everything in her power to stay calm. “Fine, I’ll go. I’ll wait outside for the bus.” She walked out the front door and slammed it behind her. She didn’t care. Dad wasn’t his usual self.

As she stood there waiting for the bus, she looked at Dad’s car sitting there on the side of the road.
