Chapter Thirteen
Searching for Answers
When Sturgess said The Fear Factory was big, he wasn’t kidding. I started retracing the path from the dormitory building back to sales and marketing, then to the main auditorium, and from there back to the hall of fears.
When I got to where I thought the gray door should be, I found nothing but a solid wall. I was sure I was in the right place, but obviously I was wrong. I decided to keep following the hallway as far as it would go.
As I kept walking I noticed something strange happening… the further down the hall I went, the darker it got… as if someone was turning a dimmer switch with each step I took. Eventually, I reached a point where it became so dark, it became difficult to see. Then I took one more step and I was in total darkness. And, although it was pitch black, I knew exactly where I was…
I was in the dark room.
I placed my hands on the wall and felt around until, just as I had earlier in the day, I found the door. I turned the knob, pulled the door open, and once again light streamed into the hall. At this moment I fully expected to hear Sturgess yell for me to close the door, but all was silent.
“Mr. Sturgess?” I called out, looking around, seeing his chair was empty. Once again, the bright red door across the room caught my eye. Maybe he’s back there, I thought, walking to the door and turning the knob.
Locked.
But, just as I turned to leave, I noticed that Sturgess had left his computer running. And he was logged on!
Now, while I pride myself as being a person with high integrity, I hadn’t come this far to not get answers. So, just as I had earlier that morning, I took a seat at Miles Sturgess’ computer and started pecking at the keyboard, with no idea of what I was looking for or what I would find. All I knew was that there was more to this Fear Factory place than they were willing to share… and this was as good a place as any to start looking.
