Rising back to my feet, I wipe away the drop of blood threatening to fall from my lips.

As soon as my eyes take in the sight of the approaching vampires, spells begin to appear from within their ranks. Like the humans behind us, our opponents have sent their mages and archers forward, intending to begin the battle with a contest of magic and ranged weapons skills.

“Ashton's not here.” Laya releases a spell of her own, and the world takes on a bluish hue.

“He is not.” I watch the incoming spells through her magical barrier. “We can continue as planned.”

“Mmm.” The first Beginner-Class [Fireball] hits her [Shimmering Shield], exploding on impact.

Being in the space between both armies, we've become an obvious target for the vampires to focus. Although known for our specialty into Dark Magic, each element has its place in battle.

The Advanced-Class Earth Spell, [Acid Splash] splatters onto the barrier, dripping down like thick honey after failing to penetrate.

It's followed by the Master-Class Wind Spell, [Lightning], striking our barrier and leaving a streak of light in my vision for a brief second. It also fails to break through, but it's far from the only magic aimed at us.

The constant sound of projectile-based spells impacting the [Shimmering Shield] brings back memories of a sudden and powerful hail storm that once caught my family when we were out of the house, riding in a carriage.

As a child, I thought that there was nothing coming from the sky that could be as dangerous as the large clumps of ice that were beating on our carriage roof, threatening to break through. But I hadn't accounted for what was possible when enough people gathered together with a singular purpose.

The [Ice Lance] spells hurled our way make the fall of natural hail seem almost trivial by comparison. Each cast hitting the barrier holds more power than the hundreds of falling ice that hit us every minute that night.

That's why it's not surprising when I hear a cast of [Shimmering Shield] shatter.

“One down.” I continue to watch the rain of spells with a casual expression. “Five to go.”

“The focus on us will only increase.”

“True. They're getting close enough that even the less magically-inclined in the back can start hurling spells at us.”

Most soldiers know magic. In fact, it's exceptionally rare to find one who can't cast at least one offensive spell. So although the mages have taken the front, that doesn't mean the ones in back can't add to the assault.

Even more magic than before covers the sky, coming from both in front of and behind us, raining down on both armies. Although it's already difficult to see due to the sheer number of spells, our vision is totally stripped from us as flames erupt from the ground around us.

The Master-Class spell, [Flame Pillar], isn't a projectile. It can be cast at the enemy's feet, bypassing the [Shimmering Shield] spell entirely. At least, that's the case if the caster is a fool. And Laya is anything but.

The barrier fully encompasses our bodies, including the ground beneath our feet.
