âAmber? Amber, fuck, you need to wake up, baby! Amber, whereâs the baby? Whereâs Katie?â Dannyâs voice sounded so small and far away, but there was something more to it. A tone that made her stomach turn with fear. The anger there wasnât a surprise, but the evident fear in his voice was.
Amber groaned. She tried to open her eyes, but it hurt to move her head. Hell, it hurt to breath.
Big hands shook her shoulders gently. Well, it was probably supposed to be gentle, but even the slightest motion made the pain flare in her body.
She whimpered softly, hot tears running down her cheeks as she tried to force her eyes open, tried to focus on Danny.
Oh god. No.
The memories flooded back, jerking her mind back into the present. She sat up swiftly, ignoring the pain in a fit of adrenaline, head whipping back and forth as her eyes tried to focus. The cabin was just the way sheâd left it, save for one tiny detail.
Her daughter was gone. The playpen was empty, and her diaper bag was missing. There were no high-pitched giggles or babbling for food. Without Katie, everything around her seemed cold and gray.
No. This couldnât be happening.
Amberâs stomach rolled and she lurched to the side, retching on the floor. But he was right there, his strong hands holding her upright as she heaved over and over again.
âWhereâs Katie? Amber, you need to tell me what happened. Where is she? Who took her?â His hands still supported her, but she could hear the urgency in his voice. To his credit though, he was really keeping his shit together a hell of a lot better than she was.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, she felt a brief flitter of relief that at least one of them could keep a level head.
She gasped for air as the enormity of the situation really hit her. Oh, god, her baby girl! Someone stole her daughter. Her chest felt like it was on fire, her lungs struggling to expand.
âGone. They took her.â Uttering the words sent ice cold shivers down her spine.
Dannyâs body went rigid, and she could feel the fury radiating from his body. His hands clenched just a shade tighter, sending fresh ripples of pain through her body.
His voice was cold and collected. Apparently, he was switching into business mode. âWho? How many men? Was it Sean? How long ago was it?â
Amber shook her head as she finally drew a deep breath. Tears rolled down her face as fresh fear and panic hit her.
âRufus. He said Rufus misses you. Oh, god, they took herâ¦â Her voice trailed off as a host of horrible outcomes ran through her head. Her daughter was gone. Katie was gone because Amber hadnât been able to protect her.
It was her fault. All of this was her fault. She never should have let her baby out of her arms. She should have protected Katie. Her only job in the worldâthe only job that fucking matteredâwas protecting that child, and sheâd failed.
