“Janie.” I could hear Nikki’s voice in the distance. I didn’t want to answer her. I was too tired and frightened. But she was persistent, and I opened my eyes, finding myself in that same field once more.

“There you are,” she said with a smile.

“I’m frightened, Nikki. These dreams have come out of the dark of night and into the daylight of my reality. I not only saw the man who showed himself here, but I also interacted with him. This entire situation has lost all elements of amusement. This is real. These people are real. I can’t figure out why I need to help them. Why not someone else more qualified?”

“You’ve become a conduit between the dead and the living. Someone or something has decided to get us all together to find peace for these victims. We are connected to the killer in some way. Someone needs to stop him.”

“And how am I supposed to stop him?” I cried. “I’m an ordinary woman, not some superhero!”

My sister had said before that we were all connected in some way. I felt like I was becoming unhinged and struck the side of my head with the palm of my right-hand several times.

Nikki looked at me wide-eyed. I believed she was surprised at my outburst. At that moment, I noticed the sky had turned dark gray. The air was hot and charged with electricity, but I grew chilled. In the distance, I could see lightning. It seemed a storm, and a big one at that was imminent.

“Janie, I don’t think you have a choice in this matter anymore.” Without another word, she walked into the mist, leaving me with my feelings of hopelessness.

I was restless for the rest of the night, waking several times, thinking I had heard a noise outside. It sounded like someone was trying to turn the doorknob on our trailer. I heard a low growl from Marty. Just as I was about to wake John, it stopped, and Marty stopped her warning. When all was quiet again, I realized I was waiting for something but didn’t even know what that something was.
