CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Third Floor, Makeshift Sleeping Area, Casual Romance Department, FGA Tower, New York City, New York

Scratching sounds made Paris stir from the heaviest slumber she remembered having in ages. As though trying to swim up through quicksand, Paris pushed up through the layers of sleep but kept feeling tugged back into dreamland. She was aware that she was asleep but shouldn’t be.

Something soft tickled Paris’ nose, making her slap herself in the face to bat whatever it was away. That did the trick. Paris bolted upright, her hair matted to the side of her face with a nice drool glue.

“Ouch,” Paris groaned, feeling the side of her face where she’d hit her cheek. “Nothing like smacking yourself awake to start the day.”

Blinking around, Paris tried to clear the bright spots partially obstructing her vision. The light streaming through the row of windows around the department space was bright—brighter than Paris had remembered earlier.

It must be mid-day, she thought, remembering falling asleep after expending all her magic reserves for Holly and Isha.

Soft snoring pulled Paris’ attention back down. She found Faraday lying on the pillow next to where she’d fallen asleep. However, that’s not what had awoken Paris. It had been a feeling—something tickling her face.

Paris didn’t have to wonder for too much longer because that something jumped onto a nearby table. Sitting up, Paris held up her hand, ready to defend herself. However, she slumped at once, although she was still perplexed by the sight of the creature before her and how he got there.

Standing with his puffy orange tail high in the air was the large cat who belonged to Happily Ever After College.

“Casanova, how did you get here?”
